Stewart Custer Lecture Series

Stewart Custer Lecture Series

The Stewart Custer Lecture Series is designed to honor one of our most celebrated scholars, the late Dr. Stewart Custer, and to demonstrate and advance the seminary’s commitment to cultivating scholarship in service for the church. The BJU Seminary sponsors the Stewart Custer Lecture Series each fall by inviting to campus a published author whose scholarly work addresses contemporary challenges to the church. Our theme this past year was “In the Heart of the Storm: Glorifying God in Our Hostile World.” In Psalm 2 we saw the antipathy of the cosmos and in Romans 11:33–36 we saw the basis for glorifying God in the face of that antipathy.

We were delighted to welcome Doug McLachlan, former president and now chancellor of Central Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. McLachlan is a seasoned professor of homiletics and pastoral theology and an experienced pastor. From June of 1987 through May of 1994 he served on the faculty of Northland Baptist Bible College as Chairman of the Department of Bible and Graduate Studies. Both prior to and after his tenure at Northland, Dr. McLachlan served as pastor of Fourth Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN, and as president of Central Baptist Theological Seminary until 2003. After 2003 Dr. McLachlan continued to pastor Fourth Baptist for a number of years, serving as President Emeritus and Chancellor of Central Seminary, and has maintained an active preaching and teaching ministry at various colleges and seminaries, churches and conferences.

Dr. McLachlan’s alma maters include Moody Bible Institute, Pillsbury Baptist Bible College (B.A.), Central Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div; D.Hum.), and San Francisco Baptist Theological Seminary (D.D.).

He is the author of several books and articles, including Reclaiming Authentic Fundamentalism (1993) and a recent release, Thirsting for Authenticity: Calling the Church to Robust Christianity (2018). We enjoyed the prospective students who were able to join for our Preview Days to get an inside look at the seminary by spending time with students and professors. If you’re considering training at BJU Seminary, Preview Days are a great opportunity to get a taste of what it’s like. Sign up for next year!
